Haven for Horses is a non-profit horse rescue located in Buxton Maine. Operating on 40 acres in the small town of Buxton Maine. Haven was intially started to fulfill a life long dream of helping animals.
When I started H4H I had no idea of the need within not only my community but the United States for equine rescue. And I was not prepared for that need within the first six months of operation H4H had rescued 14 horses. I was also not prepared for the financial aspect of 14 horses, being a 501c-3 unless donations come in the finacial burden rests on the farm. These 14 horses came to the farm in various conditions from the starved and neglected to the owner surrender. Each horse brought with them character, charisma, and alittle craziness. Their bodies might be weak but their spirits are strong.
My first goal was to save as many horses as I could as fast as possible. A year and a half later that objective has changed slightly. Spirits are strong but most horses that arrive at any rescue need something more than just food, water, and shelter. They need time, kind hearts, and healing hands. Those things are not possible if you have a barn over flowing with horses. So while the objective now is to still save as many horses as possible I just can't save them all at once.
What intially started out as a dream has become a reality.
